From the Orange County Register article: Beginning with the 2012 tax bill (the one due in April 2013), the state Franchise Tax Board will require property owners to break down their property taxes into deductible and non-deductible portions. That means property owners who have been deducting their Mello-Roos fees — often running into thousands of dollars — will no…

  • Library, Christmas, Transit: Your Comments of the Week

    27 Jan 2012 | 7:00 pm
For the past few months, we've been rounding up different discussions in our comments sections, like these on school finances, roads, redevelopment, the Chargers, and more. Now we're going to start highlighting five comments from the week so you can catch up on the discussion: • Jacqueline Mary on "AG Sues Over San Diego's Transportation Future": There is no excuse for sticking to a plan that advocates just using cars. There is no planet B. The American excessive use of personal vehicles is more costly, more of a hassle, more unhealthy, and endangers the planet's future. We need a MODERN…
  • Letter: What's Wrong with Papa Doug's "Vision"

    27 Jan 2012 | 6:30 pm
I kept staring at the drawing of Papa Doug's "vision," wondering why it seemed so strange to me. There are those two tiny beaches, the promenade and park named after two minority icons, the boat access channel and above all, the concept of a "sports/entertainment" district. Finally it hit me what's wrong here. Despite the naysayers, this really is a great sports city, with perhaps the best year 'round weather in the world. But it's not a great spectator sports city, never has been. Sure, we have pro football and baseball, and once had an NBA team that left in short order, but the Chargers and…
  • Opinion: Convention Centers Are Not 'Economic Engines'

    27 Jan 2012 | 6:00 pm
During tough economic times, the best strategy to sell politically unpopular projects that primarily benefit the privileged few at the expense of the many is to argue that they will serve as "engines of economic growth." This strategy was used by former redevelopment chief Fred Maas to make the case for robbing the city's General Fund — and county and state budgets — to pay for more downtown redevelopment. It is being used by the Chargers to make the case for building a new downtown football stadium. And it is a key argument for expanding the city's Convention Center. In each case,…

We're all busy people but it'd be a shame to let intriguing stories about our region — or related to the issues we care about as a community — slip past us. So think of this like a mix tape of interesting reads. Here's what we've been perusing recently: • Andrew Donohue, editor, on "The Man Who Owns L.A.": Ever since reading a 2006 profile of (A.E.G chairman Philip) Anschutz, he's fascinated me because of his personal anonymity, his wide influence on a town that he…

Every home should have both smoke detectors and a carbon monoxide detector installed. But they can’t protect you unless their batteries work. It’s a good idea to change detector batteries when you reset your clocks in the Spring and Fall. If you didn’t do it last November, do it now! Also check manufacturers’ recommendations to see if the units are due for replacement, which is necessary from time to time. If you live in a seasonally cold part of the country, check that vents are not blocked by accumulated snow and ice; your furnace and some appliances like the…

There is a whole world of wonder inside a fig most people know little of, from fig wasps to seeds. Every day I get blown away by certain characteristics of plants. There is no lack of drama or intrigue here. From succulents that look like rocks to flowers that smell like carrion to attract pollinators, the botanical world never seems to disappoint. It would be nice to think that plants do this for the pure pleasure of us humans. But this is, of course, not the case. Their reason is simple: survival. I thought it would be fun to look at some of the various ways plants distribute their seeds.

Truthfully, this year I lucked out, as they were having a bit of a warm front. I generally enjoyed balmy 40-degree weather. And it’s a good thing, because I was…

At our recent year-end office meeting, we again gave our little State of the Real Estate Market address to our agents. We basically copied and pasted last year's summary — and the summary from the year before. Have you heard the news?! The 32.5 million dollars that the library still needed has been funded. Isn’t that amazing?! I could not be more excited since I live in the East Village just blocks away from this beauty. Downtown’s Central Library has been boasted, criticized and questioned for awhile now so when I heard this interview on NPR with Mel Katz, Chair of the San Diego Library Foundation, a renewed sense of hope and anticipation came over me (and other Downtown San Diego residents, I’m sure). The Hilton Bayfront Hotel located right by the waterfront in the East Village/Ballpark District in Downtown San Diego is one of the largest hotels in the region if you count by room. A plan to extend the hotel that currently have 1,190 rooms with an additional 500 rooms will for sure make the Hilton climb up to #1. The extension has only reached its early stages and a few things are to consider such as financing, entitlements and amendments to the hotels lease with the Port of San Diego. Should this project be down for ground breaking…it will at least take about 5 years for completion.
