  • What Nathan Fletcher Wants to Do for Schools

    16 May 2012 | 12:00 pm
With San Diego Unified School District in continued financial distress, the city's four major mayoral candidates have made K-12 education an issue in the campaign. The city has no direct control over the school system and current Mayor Jerry Sanders has largely avoided talking about education during his seven-year tenure. But across the country, big city mayors increasingly have gotten more involved in their K-12 education systems. And in San Diego, public polls show voters want the mayor and City Council to pay more attention here. In a series of stories this week, we'll be laying out the…

It is not, as many people mistakenly believe, Mexico’s Independence Day. Although the Mexican army was eventually defeated, the Batalla de Puebla became a symbol of Mexican unity and patriotism. Tim Stauffer, fresh off the DL and a few rehab starts, made just a few mistakes but overall pitched well in his 2012 debut. He allowed three runs on seven hits over five innings, striking out five and walking three, and even brought home the tying run in the 4th with a sac bunt. Our Padres then scored the go-ahead run in the top of the fifth on a Chase Headley two-out single, and Stauffer pitched a scoreless bottom of the 5th. Stauffer was then due up in the lineup in the 6th, but Bud Black sent in Jeff Suppan as a…

Welcome back to the spotlight, Yun Zi!It has been a couple of months, but I’m happy to report that giant panda Yun Zi is now on exhibit for guests to view. Sunday, May 13, was his first day back, and he was putting on quite a show for our lucky guests in the morning. A perfect Mother’s Day treat for our visiting mothers! Since father Gao Gao was in that exhibit previously, Yun Zi spent the morning scent marking the entire exhibit. He also was running around and rolling around to show off and have fun. When the front viewing area was redone a couple of years ago, our keepers tried to…

Angie (in middle) and other DTCC staff help promote desert tortoise care at the Plant Sale.Spring is here, and the San Diego Zoo Desert Tortoise Conservation Center (DTCC) is gearing up for the 2012 season. Tortoises are emerging from hibernation, and local custodians of tortoises have lots of questions for the DTCC staff! One of our roles is to help educate Las Vegas residents about wild and pet desert tortoises. Attending local events such as the Springs Preserve Plant Sale is one way to reach people. A capuchin monkey perches on a palm frond as it sways in the wind. Pop Quiz: What’s invisible, odorless, an unlimited natural resource, and sometimes taken for granted…even cursed upon? Here is a clue: We are now using this renewable resource to produce about 4 percent of our electricity needs in the U.S., and that number is rapidly growing. If you guessed the wind, you’re correct! The almighty wind, a constant and reliable key to our planet’s ecosystem, is so common and present we tend to not even think about it. Now that we are starting to realize its potential, it might be a good…

Panamanian golden frog If you sat next to me on the plane traveling home from Panama this past February, you probably thought that my tote bag was full of souvenirs from a grand, tropical vacation. Instead, I was carrying the carefully preserved and packaged bodies of endangered frogs from captive survival-assurance populations. This was a trip that required months of careful planning and lots of red tape in obtaining and using the complicated permits needed to transport wildlife samples. Far from being morbid, icky, or gross, these specimens were extremely valuable for scientific efforts to…

A lion-tailed macaque One of the fun things about working in a zoo is that each day brings something new and different; we never know what we will be working on from one day to the next. Most of our work in the Wildlife Disease Laboratories, San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research, involves examining animal tissues and fluids for disease surveillance, diagnostics, and research designed to improve the health and well-being of the animals in our care. But every once in a while we have to solve a mystery about strange things found in our animal exhibits. Animal keepers are very…

“It’s stupid to give away your content for free,” my daughter scolded. Daughter Number 1 is home on a brief layover between journalism stints at New York Magazine and The New York Times Washington D.C. Bureau. We were discussing the parallels between the changes in her profession and mine brought about by the Internet. And when she uttered those words, she pretty much summed up what I see as the central issue to the third-parting syndication debate. It’s stupid to give away content for free. But so many agents and brokers continue not only to do just that, but to do it…

H/t to Agent Genius for introducing me to Piktochart, a cool little site for creating infographics on the fly without breaking a sweat. Well, it's not really that easy. First you have to have something you want to communicate. On another morning when I did't have a home inspection looming, I am pretty certain I could get my creative juices flowing and unleash all the glory that is the infographic (All the cool kids are doing it!) to share some complex real estate-related concept. Like why you need a downpayment to buy a house. Or how when banks use the word "streamlined"…

Isn't this just ducky? Just in time for tax filing (not). In an interpretive about-face, it would appear that people blessed with a Mello Roos assessment may now continue to claim those payments as deductions on their taxes, according to the California State Franchise Tax Board. And by "people," I mean me. According to the San Francisco Chronicle: On the eve of tax-filing deadline, the Franchise Tax Board abandoned its campaign to get California property owners not to deduct a portion of their real estate taxes. From the Golden State's website: At this time, we do not plan…

One wants a picture-perfect home with all of the goodies (granite, stainless, resort amenities, dancing bears and ponies) and at rollback pricing. The other wants a deal – one that “needs a little work,” the idea being when that they hang up their hammer, they will sweat equity and bragging rights to show for it. If you are a buyer, the key is in knowing into which category you fall. You can’t have it both ways. One could argue that you have…

Better to talk about termite inspections or market trends, I thought.  But as important as those things are to our clients, they seem just too trivial today.
